This August saw the sixth annual Back to School Fair at Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), featuring dozens of local clubs and businesses, from sports and fitness to arts, learning, social and health organisations, and even the Around DB team!

Each year, the money raised from the event goes to community projects, alternating between Discovery College (DC) and DBIS. This year, Discovery College had the privilege of receiving $12,000 which has been used to train Year 11 students to become accredited first aiders.

“We were looking at using the donation for something that would not only have an impact on our students, but also the DB community,” said secondary vice-principal Sue Thomas.

Through the expertise of DC’s very own health professional, Sarah Walker, the College chose for the students to take ‘The Community First Course’ module from First Aid International (UK), which has received approval from the Labour Departmentof Hong Kong.

The donation was used to lower the cost of the required materials for each student. Currently, half of the cohort has completed the course and by mid-November, there will be over 80 newly qualified First Aiders in the DB community!

Discovery College and the Back to School Fair committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to all of the vendors who took part this year as well as the DB community for their continued support.
